heavily inspired by the crochet heart granny square, but I wanted a square oriented on the diagonal! here are the steps I followed to make that happen:

Abbreviations (US)
ch – chain loop
sc – single crochet

Gauge and Size
▪ Each completed full square measures ~5”x5”
pattern steps
Start with yarn color for your heart (Bright Red)
- Create a magic ring and ch 3
- Round 1: Work 12 dc into magic ring. Sl to first dc. Pull tightly to close the ring and place a marker for the beginning of the round.
- Round 2: Do not chain, skip 1 st, [8 tc], dc, [dc, hdc], [2hdc], [hdc,dc], ch1 (this ch will be the bottom point of your heart), [dc,hdc], [2hdc], [hdc,dc], dc, [8tc], skip 1 st, sl to first dc from previous round and fasten off
Switch to yarn color for middle (White)
- Round 3: Attach new yarn at top of heart between the two bumps, ch 3
- tc in same stitch you attached at, dc, [dc,hdc], hdc, [hdc,sc], [2sc], sc, sc, [sc,hdc], hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sc
- This will bring you to the bottom point of the heart
- Sl into backloop of the bottom chain
- You’ll then work the same stitches in reverse to come up the opposite side of the heart: sc, sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, [hdc,sc], sc, sc, [2sc], [sc,hdc], hdc, [hdc,dc], dc, dc in last stitch
- sl to first tc from beginning of round
- ch 3
- Round 4:
- [dc,tc] into same stitch as ch, ch 3, [tc,dc] into next st to create the first corner
- dc into next 8 st
- [dc,tc], ch 3, [tc,dc] to create the second corner
- dc in next 8 st, [dc,tc], ch 3, [tc,dc], dc in next 8 st, [dc,tc], ch 3, [tc,dc] to make two more corners
- dc into last 8 st
- sl to first dc from beginning of round and fasten off
Switch to yarn color for outer border (Light Pink)
- Round 5: Attach yarn anywhere in the round and ch 2. Work dc in every stitch around. When you get to each of the corner chain spaces, work [2dc, ch 3, 2dc]
Sl to first dc, fasten off, weave in all ends. You might want to use a blocking board to help shape the square and make sure they are all the same size.
